At KME we manufacture commercial diving accessories and equipment made
to the needs and specifications from the divers out there "doing it".
Jim Knannlein, President and founder of KME Diving Suits, Inc. worked as a commercial diver for over
20 years, using all types of gear from SCUBA to Hard Hat. Jim got his start making some of the basic,
but hard to find, accessory equipment, such as harnesses, knives, heavy weight belts, and a full face
mask with separate head protector, working in his small home shop between diving jobs. In 1965
Knannlein Marine Enterprises, d.b.a. KME was registered as a business in the State of Washington.
In 1985, KME (short for Knannlein Marine Enterprises) was incorporated as "KME Diving Suits, Inc."
Previous to that time our specialized heavy gear type commercial drysuits, designed to be used with
lightweight masks and air hats, were purchased from a small company called Dry Diving Systems. DD
manufactured specialized commercial drysuits for KME to sell to other commercial divers. Near the end
of 1984, DDS made the decision to quit manufacturing diving suits and concentrate on its growing
fishing wader business. They accepted an offer from KME to purchase the entire drysuit production
unit and KME was then in business full time. The demands of the growing business forced Jim to retire
from commercial diving in the later part of 1985 and a few years later from the local divers union.
As KME became more well known, customers asked us to fabricate high quality custom after market parts,
in sizes or with special additional features. As our reputation for high quality materials and workmanship
grew, we were engaged to manufacture "soft goods" for several diving equipment manufacturers.
These special items, along many new products developed to fit specific "niches" in commercial diving
equipment needs, became the list below.
